SOOAKLAND'S SOLA EVENT WAS THE PERFECT MERGER OF BAY AREA AND LA CULTURE

Last weekend, SoOakland hosted their first SoLA event at 5750 West Adams Boulevard in Los Angeles, CA. The purpose was to present a merger of Bay Area culture and LA culture, and I must say they did that honey!

It only took a year for Mayor Libby Schaaf to recognize Jamerson's cultural events and proclaim July 30, 2016 as SoOakland Day.

SoOakland is an amazing, safe space for everyone, although it was created for natives and people of color to have a place to unapologetically celebrate who they are without criticism or scrutiny. “I’m just trying to be an example for the young black girls that are coming up in Oakland and feeling like their dreams are too big or unrealistic . Gentrification is hitting hard in Oakland and everyone is extremely sensitive and emotional about what’s happening to natives in Oakland. So it was very important that within the space you feel like home. SoOakland is a vibe.”

SOL SISTERS

There are a bunch of nightlife movements happening in the Bay and we got the chance to speak to the founders of two of the biggest - Shayla Bang of So Oakland, and Amina & Jesse Brooks of TrapxArt. Not only do these brands give you parties and provide a space to function, they also give you a platform to promote your art, your talent, and facilitate a safe space for you to do it in.

SHE'S SO OAKLAND

Shayla “ShaylaBang” Jamerson is the woman behind the movement, and certainly an entrepreneurial force to be reckoned with. As an advocate for the preservation of culture, her efforts hardly go unnoticed; Especially by her beloved City of Oakland that has officially proclaimed July 30th as SoOakland Day.

SHAYLABANG TAKEOVER: A MODERN DAY BLACK PANTHER

“Everything was about how violent Oakland was – nothing about the positive attributes coming from the urban communities. I felt like it was my responsibility to highlight the positives [by creating] a safe space that showcased us as a community without watering down who we are. A space that allowed us to break stereotypes and put our guards down. A space that allowed us to showcase our talents and support each other’s businesses.”

SHAYLA JAMERSON IS SOOAKLAND

“I kept leaving Oakland, and didn’t understand why. ‘I’m from a dope place, why do I keep running away?’” she said she asked herself. “It took me going away to realize my city’s worth.”
